Mi funding Hub
Overview
The MI Funding Hub was created through a partnership between the Michigan Municipal League and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity to simplify access to state and federal grant opportunities. Municipalities across Michigan were navigating a fragmented and complex funding landscape, making it difficult to discover, understand, and apply for resources. The opportunity was to create a unified digital platform supported by a clear brand system that would make funding more accessible, intuitive, and actionable.
My Role
As Art Director, I led the creative direction for the brand identity and digital experience in collaboration with strategists, designers, developers, and stakeholders across both organizations. My role included brand strategy, visual identity design, UX and UI design direction, and ongoing collaboration through the website build and launch.
Approach
Before the platform could take shape, we needed to establish a brand that could bring clarity and cohesion to a complex system. I worked with the team to define a visual and conceptual direction centered around accessibility, inclusivity, and ease of navigation, while thoughtfully integrating elements from both partner organizations.
From there, I helped develop a dynamic visual identity built around the idea of “Fund a Better Way.” The system was designed to feel approachable and optimistic, using bold color, contemporary typography, and flexible graphic elements to create a sense of clarity and momentum within a traditionally dense information space.
I also contributed to the design direction of the website experience, focusing on simplifying navigation, improving search functionality, and making funding opportunities easier to explore. The interface was designed to prioritize usability, with a strong emphasis on mobile responsiveness, resource connectivity, and intuitive user journeys that guide municipalities directly to relevant opportunities.
Working closely with the development team, I supported the integration of dynamic data systems that allow the platform to update grant listings regularly, along with custom interactive components that improve engagement and accessibility.
Outcome
The final result is a cohesive brand and digital platform that transforms how municipalities in Michigan discover and engage with funding opportunities. The MI Funding Hub simplifies a traditionally complex process, making resources more discoverable, navigable, and actionable. Since launch, the platform has been recognized with multiple Davey Awards, including Best Government Site, Best Visual Appeal, and Best Homepage.
